"...another reason I'm intrigued with the hanged of Salem, especially the women, is that a number of them aroused suspicion in the first place because they were financially independent, or sharp-tongued, or kept to themselves. In other words, they were killed off for the same sort of life I live right now but with longer skirts and fewer cable channels." Sarah Vowell, The partly cloudy patriot.

Dontcha just love it when...

...A student you know very well has not been to class in weeks and weeks emails you to find out whether or not you covered something in class? Something you covered over and over?

..A student asked for an extension for his paper. You ask for documentation of the "family emergency" that made it impossible for him to get his paper done on time. He informs you that there is no such thing because it was a "private family emergency." You know, that's when the student should just spill the beans and say what it was - and find some fricking way to document it. I don't care if his mommy writes me a note - just get me something.

...You offer your failing students the opportunity to turn in all late papers so they don't fail the class, and not a single one of them takes you up on it.

I had one student claim that my requirement for documentation of an illness was a violation of FERPA.

No, posting your "medical" excuse on my door would be such a thing -- but, asking you to get the doctor or social worker to verify that you really were with your sick kid in the emergency room is no such thing.

All things that constitute actual emergencies also include documentation. One of the things we figured out when my sister died is that everyone wants paperwork. We made 25 certified copies of her death certificate and that wasn't enough! What your student means by "private" is that he did something that was stupid or embarassing and the paperwork would reveal it -- he'd be better off to admit that he got arrested for drunken fighting in a bar....
