"...another reason I'm intrigued with the hanged of Salem, especially the women, is that a number of them aroused suspicion in the first place because they were financially independent, or sharp-tongued, or kept to themselves. In other words, they were killed off for the same sort of life I live right now but with longer skirts and fewer cable channels." Sarah Vowell, The partly cloudy patriot.

Drive by blogging

I'm trying to read an article about the cult of happiness and the problems with positive psychology before leaving today ... and this line made me laugh so much, coffee came out my nose:

"Imagine, for a moment, where we'd be if Martin Luther King Jr. had
decided to purge his negative emotions by keeping a gratitude journal?"

it's from yesterday's *Globe & Mail* article: "Happy? How do you
know? And does it really matter? Millions of dollars are being poured
into studies on happiness. The cult of cheerfulness even pervades
cancer wards. So why are we so miserable?" by Leah McLaren.
