"...another reason I'm intrigued with the hanged of Salem, especially the women, is that a number of them aroused suspicion in the first place because they were financially independent, or sharp-tongued, or kept to themselves. In other words, they were killed off for the same sort of life I live right now but with longer skirts and fewer cable channels." Sarah Vowell, The partly cloudy patriot.

It's like the apocalypse* or something...

the power goes out in the bay area, and almost the entire internet goes down!

* Apparently my reading about religion and cults (today's reading was on branch davidian) has taught me stuff ... like I learned that the reason religious people don't cremate their dead is so that when christ rises from the grave, all those dead people can rise too. If you are cremated, you are out of luck and won't be able to become a zombie. Oh, so that's where the idea of zombies comes from, right? Some fear of being reanimated before christ, and then you'd be bad and want to eat human flesh? I havev so much to learn about how religious beliefs affect things in ways I never knew.

yes! especially if you live an evil life, the devil may choose to reanimate your corpse after death. A demon may take over the body. Actually, under some ways of thinking a demon can fuse with the soul (which is the animating force) of an individual. The result is a walking dead person, be it zombie or vampire.

on the flipside, you've got uncorrupted corpses of the exceptionally holy. Sometimes they walk around, too. In that case, it's a proleptic sign of the coming resurrection.

Christianity is weird. :)
